Most dairy farmers know the pattern. Some calves seem to thrive from the start. They grow well, transition smoothly to solid feed, and reach breeding weight without trouble. Others struggle early and often need more attention throughout the rearing phase.

For years, nutritionists assumed this difference was mostly about energy and protein supply. But recent research suggests something else is happening in the first weeks of life.

LifeStart scientists at Trouw Nutrition began looking more closely at cow’s milk itself; not just as a source of nutrients, but as a biological signal that guides early calf development. That research led to the development of Sprayfo Ultimo, a calf milk designed to replicate some of the natural signals present in milk. The goal was simple: help calves develop faster and more efficiently during the milk phase.

Stronger calves, fewer setbacks

A newborn calf enters the world with a digestive system that is still developing. In the first days after birth, the gut is highly sensitive, which is why many health challenges occur early in life.

In natural milk, certain fatty acids and bioactive components appear to play a role in guiding the development of the gut and rumen. These components act as signals that help strengthen the gut lining and stimulate the structures responsible for nutrient absorption.

Inspired by this process, researchers developed a patent-pending fatty acid profile for Sprayfo Ultimo. This proprietary fatty acid profile is designed to support similar developmental signals just like natural cow milk. For the first time, it is possible to steer nutrition towards the optimal fatty acid levels in cow’s milk and deliver the highest digestibility and solubility on farm. The formulation also combines:

  • a high-energy nutrient profile
  • balanced trace minerals
  • PhytoComplex solution that promotes a healthy gut

Together, these elements aim to support the calf during the most sensitive stage of its development.

From gut development to rumen development

Supporting early gut development is only one part of the story. Certain fatty acids present in milk also appear to influence rumen development. A well-developed rumen encourages calves to start consuming solid feed earlier, which is a key step for successful weaning and continued growth.

In practice, calves receiving the feeding programme showed higher starter intake and stronger bodyweight development during the first 12 weeks of life. In trial work, calves were around 15 kg heavier at 12 weeks compared with conventional feeding programmes.

For farmers, this is where the biological concept becomes visible on farm: calves eat well, grow steadily, and transition more smoothly through the rearing stages.

What the results look like on farm

The development approach behind Sprayfo Ultimo has been thoroughly tested by science. Across several studies, results showed:

  • about 20-25% fewer health-related interventions
  • 10-12% higher starter intake
  • 15-20% stronger early growth

The impact becomes particularly visible later in the rearing phase. Heifers raised on the feeding programme reached breeding weight 3-4 weeks earlier than animals fed conventional milk replacers.

Making better use of the calves you raise

Another benefit observed on farms is improved efficiency in the replacement group. Stronger, well-developing calves are more likely to progress successfully into the herd. Farms using the feeding programme reported that 1–2% fewer spare replacement animals were needed to maintain herd size. That improvement represents an additional €15–30 value per calf, simply because more of the animals you raise become productive cows.

What does that mean on a typical farm?

When you combine the numbers, the value is clear. And with an investment of around €20-30 per calf, the return on investment becomes easy to see:

  • €8–12 per calf from fewer health-related interventions
  • €42-54 per calf from reaching breeding weight earlier
  • €15–30 per calf from improved replacement efficiency

Together, that represents roughly €70–90 in value per calf. After an investment of around €20-30 per calf, that leaves approximately €40–60 net value per calf. On a farm raising 100 heifers per year, that equals €4,000–€6,000 in potential annual net value.

Early nutrition shapes the future cow

The calf phase is short, but its impact lasts for the rest of the cow’s life. Calves that start strong grow more consistently, reach breeding targets sooner, and enter the milking herd stronger. That’s why more dairy producers are looking closely at early-life nutrition strategies such as Sprayfo Ultimo.

When calves get the right start, the benefits extend beyond the calf pen. Early life nutrition delivers advantages that endure for the rest of the cow’s life and contribute to the farm’s bottom line.
