Dairy Diary: May business update

What’s NEW in the dairy farming world? We report on an expanded US Emergency Use Authorisation for Zoetis’ screwworm treatment, a Breedi webinar on genomic breeding for heat tolerance, and an upcoming ADSA presentation on transition cow nutrition. We also highlight Danone Morocco’s investment in portable on-farm feed analysers, and key global leadership appointments at VIV Worldwide, World Dairy Expo, and Novus International. This and more.

Expanded US authorisation for Zoetis’ New World screwworm treatment

Zoetis has received expanded US regulatory authorisation for Dectomax-CA1 (doramectin injection), including conditional approval for a new 100 mL vial size and an Emergency Use Authorization covering multiple livestock species. The EUA extends use for the prevention and treatment of New World screwworm (myiasis) in dairy cattle, swine, sheep, horses and deer, helping broaden access to parasite control tools during outbreaks. The product remains conditionally approved for use in cattle for New World screwworm larvae.

Sustell expands automated feed footprinting capabilities

Sustell, an ISO-assured animal protein footprinting platform, is enabling automated feed life cycle assessment (LCA) calculations at scale through integration with major feed formulation systems and ingredient databases. Endorsed under the GMP+ MI5.7 Feed Life Cycle Assessment standard, the platform supports sustainability reporting, regulatory compliance and decision-making across the animal protein value chain.

Breedi webinar explores genetics of dairy heat tolerance

Breedi and Eurofins Genomics recently hosted a webinar exploring how genomic selection can help improve heat tolerance in dairy cattle. Researchers from the University of Queensland and University of Wisconsin–Madison discussed the development of genomic breeding values for heat tolerance, the data required for genomic models, and the relationship between heat tolerance, milk yield and fertility. The webinar also examined the role of the SLICK gene in dairy breeding programmes.

Danone Morocco invests in 10 X-NIR portable analysers

Danone Morocco has invested in 10 portable X-NIR analysers from Dinamica Generale to strengthen feed quality monitoring across its dairy supplier network. The handheld system enables technicians and nutritionists to analyse feed directly on-farm in under a minute, supporting faster nutritional decisions and forage quality checks. The analysers can measure key nutritional parameters including dry matter, crude protein, starch, fibre and fat across a range of feed ingredients commonly used in dairy production.

Animine marks 15 years of innovation and partnership, celebrating with distributors and collaborators in Chamonix and Hoi An to reflect its European roots and early Asian market beginnings. The company specialises in precision trace minerals for animal nutrition.

Novus Award Winner to Present at ADSA

The winner of the 2025 Novus Award, doctorate candidate Rebecca El Hawat, will present her research during the transition period at the American Dairy Science Association (ADSA) meeting in June. The award, which recognises excellence in dairy research and innovation from those who are just beginning their work in the field, is presented annually at the European Federation of Animal Science (EAAP) annual meeting. Her present research focuses on the role of rumen protozoa in shaping fermentation patterns, methane production, and milk fatty acid composition in dairy cows during the transition period.
