Rumination can explain a lot about the cow’s health and feeding behaviour. But in outdoor grazing systems, rumination is difficult to measure. An automatic system to do this has been put to the test. A team of Swiss researchers evaluated and validated an automatic jaw movement recorder (RumiWatch, hereafter called RWS) for ingestive and rumination behaviours of dairy cows during grazing and supplementation in the barn.
